It's hot. Summer isn't formally over until the end of September, but sweltering temperatures continue in numerous places well beyond that date. The soaring heat can sham a challenge when it comes to pet relocation.

Many years ago, I used to fly with my dog on a quite regular basis. That was long before heightened security, long waits on the tarmac, and booking flights with links to save money. I never had to think about my pet's protection or comfort... it was just a short 2-hour hop, with rapid baggage return.

There are, however, a few things that you can do to help keep your beloved pets comfy when travelling on an airline. A little bit of preparation will go a long way to ensuring their protection, and your piece of mind?

We mentioned in an earlier posting about basecoat removal for thick-coated dogs. This can help keep the air circulating while their fur acts as a natural insulator keeping warmth away from the body. It is not sensible to shave your pet, as they do require that protective coating of fur to act as a barrier, and defend from the sun. Merely removing the undercoat and any matting is all that's required.

Some pets are used to kennels, as numerous are trained in them, or sleep in them at night. However, if your pet isn't familiar to a travel kennel, allow them some time to adjust to one. Numerous weeks prior to travel, have your pet spend time inside the kennel, or crate. Begin with brief intervals, working up to longer periods.

Airflow is significant to keeping your pet cool while in transit. Use a crate that is aerated on all sides. If there are no holes in the back, you can tool a few. The size of the holes should be as large as possible devoid of allowing your pet to put their nose during. Our reference is to drill a grid about 5 holes across, and three down. Water

Keeping your pet hydrated throughout pet relocation is crucial. Some pet stores sell clip-on bowls for water that can be friendly to the crate. Those work fine, but if you have a larger pet, here's a method we recommend. Take a Tupperware container and securely lock it to the door of the kennel with a zip tie. One way to be guaranteed they will have water for a longer period is to freeze water in the dish the darkness before. This way it won't spill during the ride to the aerodrome, but it will be ready to drink when required.

Airlines need absorbent bedding inside the travel kennel. We feel that a considerable amount of shredded newspaper is the best material. It offers some padding, and can also be effortlessly disposed at the end of the trip. You may want to put an old t-shirt inside the crate for console. If your scent is on the shirt, it can help ease your pet. Avoid using thick blankets and pet beds inside the kennel. They trap heat.
